Folding Tables 19th Century
Monks folding tables used to hold sacred prayers - pair
19 century
'standing' tables, usually 3 sides. An open back allows sitting 'under
the table to say prayers. Thought to be useful during travel - as the
'legs' fold up into themselves, making for a simple wooden shelf to
allow for a nomadic lifestyle. These stand-like tables will have
a front, two sides, and a top, but are without
any kind of back. Some
of these backless tables may have a bar or a shelf which holds the sides
rigid,
but often there is nothing. Tables like these were commonly used in
monasteries
.
